Depression
I Would Rather Sleep Through This
Depression can be challenging in many ways. It seems as if you’re either numb or feeling things too intensely. Your emotions feel out of control and you would rather isolate than snap at someone. Getting out of bed and facing another day makes you want to cry. Sleep is an escape and you do it as much as you can, but you’re always tired and never have any energy. Your body feels so heavy.
Overwhelmed with feelings, you shut them down and become numb. Your brain keeps telling you that you will never feel better, that it’s hopeless.
All sorts of negative thoughts about yourself flood your head: “I don’t deserve to be happy,” “No one loves me,” “No one understands me at all.”
It’s a struggle just to breathe. You would rather lie on the couch than talk to anyone, but you feel so lonely. You put on a happy mask and try to function, but everything is so fucking hard.
You don’t remember when you last had a good day and you’re not sure you will ever be happy again. You trudge through the day knowing something needs to change, but not knowing what or how.
You’ve tried self-help books, but it hasn’t changed anything. You feel guilty and burdensome if you even think about talking to friends or family. You’re ready to admit that you can’t do it alone and look for a therapist.
The thought of change is scary, even if you know it’s for the best.
I can help. Together we can figure out what it is that has you so down and what to do about it.
You may not know what you need to feel better, but together we can figure it out. Many people find that talking to someone who understands and can help them make sense of their feelings is very helpful. We can also explore coping skills to help you feel better.
I know it feels hopeless, but it’s not. It’s just that depression is playing tricks with your mind and telling you you’re helpless.
